Amsterdam UMC is set to lead a project to allow AI to profit from the wealth of data available in the health sector.

A strong AI knowledge and innovation base is very important for the Netherlands. An important aspect of this is the connectedness of Dutch researchers worldwide, and especially in Europe. With the XS Europe call, the National Growth Fund programme AiNed is making a solid contribution to this in the coming years.

Since September 2022, the AI Parade has travelled past 30 libraries in the Netherlands. AI developments are moving at lightning speed and the popularity of generative AI has attracted the interest of many citizens. There is much debate about what exactly AI is and what this systems technology has in store for us in the future.

What will define the future of arts and culture? Chances are it will be technology. There is no conceivable interaction in which technology does not play a role. In our work, in our health, in exploring the world around us and in our social lives. Our culture is steeped in technology. That is a given. It is not inherently proper or wrong. It means we have a responsibility to guide technology and shape public values in the digital domain.

NWO's NGF AiNed Fellowship Grant has been awarded to ‘Responsible AI for Voice Diagnostics’, a project led by Cristian Tejedor Garcia of Radboud University's Center for Language Studies. The project's goal is to develop new forms of speech technology that provide AI-assisted diagnosis and management of neuro-degenerative disease and AI-assisted support for improvement of pronunciation and reading skills.

The technologies for image and video analysis and understanding have seen tremendous improvement in recent years. This is thanks to the emergence of modern deep learning network architectures (e.g., variants of RNNs such as LSTMs/GRUs, Generative Adversarial Networks, Transformers, Diffusion models) and learning paradigms (e.g., adversarial learning, deep reinforcement learning, contrastive learning) and the existence of large-scale datasets with ground-truth annotations that can assist the training of these architectures.

Together with French partner Inria*, CWI will jointly explore solutions for major societal challenges in the coming years.

Leveraging exceptional AI talent is important to strengthen the national knowledge and training base in AI. We are therefore pleased to announce the two recent awards in the AiNed Fellowship grants programme to Dr Cristian Tejedor García and Dr Iacer Calixto. The AiNed Board warmly congratulates them on these awards and very much looks forward to their contribution to the AiNed programme and AI research in the Netherlands.
