European Commissioner speeds up ambitious mission against the danger of AI
She is known as the digital czar of Europe: European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. She is hastening the introduction of the new law that should restrict artificial intelligence. The first law in the world that supervises Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Vestager is the face of the so-called 'AI Act' . Technological developments are moving rapidly and artificial intelligence is putting pressure on democracies, she believes. She fears that governments will soon lose control.
“AI is a threat to the future, some say even a threat to humanity. We must take action now. First of all, against things that are already there: systems that discriminate against citizens and fake news that manipulates our elections. People will lose confidence,” says Vestager in conversation with Nieuwsuur .
European Commissioner Vestager is now completing her second term in Brussels. In conversation with Nieuwsuur she says that she also aspires to a third round. Last year she campaigned as a candidate for the presidency of the European Investment Bank EIB, but she did not receive enough support.
"The aim is a code of conduct for the use of AI that fits seamlessly with our AI legislation." Because there is one thing that everyone must realize, says Vestager. "There is no way around that: if you have the best intentions with AI, you stick to the rules of the game. Only if there is trust can we embrace this technology."
