70% of Dutch People Don’t Use Generative AI
A survey by the University of Amsterdam's AlgoSoc AI Opinion Monitor reveals that 70% of Dutch people have not used generative AI like ChatGPT. However, attitudes and usage differ by age. Researchers Ernesto de León, Fabio Votta, Theo Araujo, and Claes de Vreese surveyed nearly 4,000 respondents and will continue this study for the next three years.
AI Use and Age Differences
The survey shows a significant age gap in AI usage. Among 16 to 24-year-olds, 74% have used generative AI in the past year. In contrast, 74% of those 25 and older have never used it. "Young people are more comfortable with new technologies," says de Vreese, a lead researcher.
Recognition of AI Content
Although many do not use AI tools, 85% of respondents believe they have encountered AI-generated content online. However, most feel incapable of recognizing it, rating their ability to spot AI content at 2.58 out of 7. They believe journalists are best at detecting AI-generated content.
Future Monitoring
The AlgoSoc team will continue tracking public attitudes towards AI. "As AI use expands, especially in sectors like healthcare, we will monitor and address any concerns," de León states. This research will help understand the evolving relationship between the Dutch public and AI, informing future discussions and policies.
